The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in 2011 demonstrated the vulnerability of existing operational nuclear power plants to natural disasters, such as earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis which led to a station blackout (SBO) event for several days. Such extreme conditions necessitate strengthening the plants’ coping capability and developing appropriate severe accident management (SAM) strategies.

During an extended SBO, all alternating current (AC) power sources are lost and with the depletion of direct current (DC) battery power, secondary heat removal by the turbine-driven auxiliary feedwater pumps (TDAFWPs) is lost and the plant undergoes a severe accident. In case of failure to recover the AC power, the accident progresses and a significant amount of core material can melt and relocate to the lower head (LH) of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV). To ensure the integrity of the reactor vessel LH under the conditions of relocated core materials and the retention within the vessel of the core-melt pool formation, SAM guidelines (SAMG) were proposed to utilize a set of high-level candidate actions to mitigate the accident. These SAMG have been developed and adopted by some advanced LWRs to minimize the consequences of an extended SBO.

The in-vessel retention (IVR) severe accident mitigation strategy stands as one of the key core-melt SAM strategies of the Korean APR1400 nuclear reactor plant and aims to ensure the retention of the corium and fission products in the RPV by preventing the vessel failure. The IVR strategy is feasible for smaller power reactors but may be quite challenging for higher power reactors due to the limitation on critical heat flux. For these latter reactors, it has been suggested to combine cooling the melted reactor core material from both inside and outside the reactor vessel in order to avoid creep rupture failure and maintain its structural integrity.

To ensure the success of the intended IVR strategy, it is essential to quantify the underlying uncertainties. In this work, we consider both the epistemic (phenomena-related) and aleatory (scenario-related) uncertainties associated with the IVR strategy for high power reactors like the APR1400. A research team at the KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School (KINGS), coordinated and supervised by Professor Aya Diab, aims to understand the challenges of successfully implementing the IVR strategy for the APR1400, given the uncertainties associated with the processes involved. The goal is to identify a success window that guarantees the integrity of RPV is maintained in the event of an extended SBO.

The progression of the severe accident phenomena is modeled using the severe accident analysis code RELAP5/SCDAPSIM/MOD3.4 to simulate the response of the plant. The RELAP5 module is used for calculation of the overall reactor coolant system (RCS) thermal-hydraulics and reactor kinetics and the transport of non-condensable gases. In addition, the SCDAP module is used for calculation of the heat-up and damage progression in the core. The SCDAP module calculates the thermal, mechanical, and chemical response of the fuel rods and control rods undergoing the accident scenario. Fuel material and cladding properties are calculated by the MATPRO material property library. Various severe accident phenomena are modeled, such as oxidation, meltdown, ballooning and rupture of fuel rod cladding, release of fission products and the disintegration of fuel rods into a porous debris of molten materials, all the way to slumping and relocation of the molten corium into the LH of the RPV. The model captures the occurrence of creep failure for the RPV based on the Larson-Miller creep rupture model developed in the RELAP5/SCDAPSIM/MOD3.4 code.

For this work, a representative severe accident scenario was selected with an SBO as an initiating event. Due to the unavailability of all power, including DC batteries, the safety features are unavailable and the accident progression is faster than other accident scenarios. The assessment of the IVRS for the APR 1400 case study focuses on two high-level mitigation actions: depressurization and injection into the steam generator (SG) and the RCS.

The physics of severe accidents is very complex and entails a number of uncertainties due to the use of simplified models in the codes or due to incomplete knowledge about severe accident phenomena. Hence, it is particularly important to quantify all those underlying uncertainties before one can identify the success window of the IVR strategy. This quantification should reflect both the epistemic (e.g. melting and relocation phenomena) and aleatory (e.g. depressurization rate and timing and injection rate and timing) uncertainties. The model results can help in identification of the available success window particularly regarding the timing of relevant design parameters and operator actions during the severe accident.

For accurate and realistic results, the identification of the main uncertain input parameters and their expected ranges and distributions is essential. Accordingly, the Phenomena Identification and Ranking Table (PIRT) is used to identify the key phenomena and key uncertain parameters. For the scenario-based uncertainty parameters including the depressurization timing (i.e. ADVs and POSRVs opening time and action time), depressurization rate (i.e. percentage of valve opening), alignment time for the FLEX portable pumps, injection rate and timing, along with the water injection temperature, coolant inventory in SITs, pressure in SITs, SITs coolant temperature are considered. For the phenomenological uncertainty, the models used for core degradation, coolability, oxidation, fission product release and transportation, relocation, debris formation, melt pool formation, and the external cooling of the RPV, the heat fluxes imposed on the RPV by the molten core, are essential to predict the final state of relocated molten material and the thermal loads on the lower head (LH).

In summary, this ongoing research is focused on the severe accident modeling of an extended SBO to assess the in-vessel retention strategy for the APR 1400 subject to both epistemic and aleatory uncertainties to identify the success window and effectiveness of the IVR. In a parallel effort, an artificial intelligence algorithm is currently being developed by colleagues in this research group to leverage the robustness and efficiency of data-based models in the area of severe accident management.
