KINGS Proposal for the Future Energy Systems Integration

Enhanced awareness of environmental issues motivates global efforts to address problems arising from human activity. Particularly, the energy industry is focusing on developing and implementing solutions that reduce emissions of pollutants and CO2 to the atmosphere. The peaceful use of nuclear energy has provided a clean and reliable power source for approximately 70 years. Over this time, the safety and efficiency of Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) have been enhanced with safer and more cost-efficient technology. Nowadays, nuclear and hydro power plants are the only alternatives for reliable and carbon-free energy sources. Therefore, nuclear energy plays a key role in the energy transition towards a carbon-neutral energy system.

Future energy systems with high contributions from nuclear and renewable energy sources could face challenges arising from the characteristics of these generation technologies. The intermittent energy supply from “green” energy sources such as wind and solar is highly variable depending on weather conditions, while the preferable operating condition for NPPs is to supply the grid as base load, maintaining a stable reactor power output. One proposed solution to successfully integrate these power sources into a reliable energy system is to enhance the flexibility of NPP power output.

To achieve this goal, a research team at the KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School (KINGS) under supervision of Professor Robert Field investigated a design for Thermal Energy Storage (TES) technology for integration with the Korean-designed Advanced Power Reactor (APR1400). Over the past year, they developed the conceptual design of the Nuclear Heat Storage and Recovery (NHS&R) System.

The proposed system coupled with the APR1400 aims to decouple reactor power from the generator output, thus providing flexible electricity generation while reactor power is maintained at a constant power level. This design uses a sensible heat storage system providing industrial-scale storage capacity. Furthermore, the NHS&R is an easily scalable system at low cost in contrast to the leading energy storage technology, lithium ion batteries. The storage capacity can be adjusted according to needs of a customer. The developed system can provide high round-trip efficiency (up to 80%). This was one of the main design criteria for this project.

The APR1400 coupled with the NHS&R System can receive 20% of the generator power output (~800 MWt) under storage charging operation during a time of low power demand or increased renewable energy generation. The recovery operation enables a plant to increase power output up to 11% (~450 MWt) when there is a need for extra power in the system. The proposed NHS&R System operation allows the use of existing plant equipment to generate extra power output with no significant plant modifications. Therefore, the capital cost of installation is minimized.

The NHS&R interfaces with the APR1400 turbine cycle through specially designed heat exchangers. The heat extracted from the secondary cycle is transferred to heat transfer oil and transported to a storage facility where the heat is stored in crushed rocks. The thermal energy is recovered by transferring the heat back to the secondary cycle of the APR1400.

The selection of storage medium materials and the use of standard equipment such as heat exchangers, pumps and valves contributes to the competitive economics of this solution as compared with other energy storage technologies.

In another innovation, the NHS&R system can be constructed as an Ultra Large Barge (ULB) to reduce the cost and risk for the installation. Additionally, this concept creates a new business opportunity for the Korean shipbuilding industry.

The NHS&R System concept was presented at the American Nuclear Society (ANS) Winter Meeting 2019 in Washington D.C. The presentation gained interest among the researchers and the conceptual design was recognized by international experts.

In line with the Korean Government’s renewable energy policy, the development of the Thermal Energy Storage System in Korea would help to ensure the security of energy supplies and allow independence from weather conditions.

Detailed information on the NHS&R design can be found in the referenced journal papers (Amuda, 2020)(Kluba, 2019).
